Nature-based absorbents for industrial spill response and land remediation
Solution Developer
Aura Verde LDA
Project Description
Aura Verde LDA develops and manufactures high-performance, organic absorbent materials derived from coconut husk waste that are already deployed in real-world industrial spill response, land remediation and water protection applications. The project focuses on qualifying and adapting these proven nature-based materials for Canadian industrial applications, particularly in oil & gas operations, mining sites and remote or sensitive environments.
Aura Verde’s absorbents are designed to replace conventional synthetic and polypropylene-based products and have already been successfully used in operational spill response scenarios. The materials offer strong absorption capacity, buoyancy and safe handling characteristics, while being biodegradable and derived from renewable waste streams. This significantly reduces plastic waste, secondary pollution and Scope 3 emissions associated with traditional spill response products.
Through this CRIN Innovation Central project, Aura Verde seeks to collaborate with Canadian industry partners to conduct Canadian field qualification, performance benchmarking and demonstration deployments under real operating conditions. Use cases include spill kits for industrial sites, wellsite protection, land and waterway remediation and emergency response preparedness.
The project aims to confirm operational performance under Canadian conditions, demonstrate environmental benefits, and support practical integration into existing safety and environmental management systems. Successful validation would support broader adoption of nature-based absorbent solutions across Canadian industrial sectors while contributing to improved environmental protection and worker safety.
Support Requested
Aura Verde is seeking industry partners within the CRIN network to support pilot testing, field validation and performance benchmarking of bio-based absorbent materials under Canadian operating conditions. Desired support includes access to test sites, operational feedback, comparative testing against conventional absorbents and guidance on regulatory and industry requirements for spill response.
Project Resources
Collaborators
Potential collaborators include Canadian oil & gas operators, mining companies, environmental remediation contractors, emergency response providers, research institutions and industrial distributors active within the CRIN network.
