Carbon Storage Utilization and Sequestration (CCUS) Pilot Project
Solution Developer
Questerre
Project Description
Questerre Energy Corporation is advancing a Carbon Storage Pilot Project in Quebec to demonstrate the province’s potential for large-scale carbon storage and support its emissions reduction targets. This initiative leverages Questerre’s 25+ years of subsurface expertise and exclusive rights to explore over one million acres for storage reservoirs. The pilot aligns with Quebec’s energy transition strategy and circular economy goals by converting greenhouse gas emissions into valuable products and integrating carbon storage with low-emissions energy solutions.
The project, submitted for $40 million in government funding, includes drilling injection and monitoring wells, implementing rigorous measurement and verification protocols, and assessing key factors such as storage capacity, containment, and pressure management. Located near Becancour—close to major CO₂ emitters—the site offers direct pipeline connections for CO₂ injection and potential delivery of low-emissions gas. Phase I will test injection rates of up to 60 tonnes of CO₂ per day for one year, while Phase II envisions a small-scale commercial facility producing low-emissions hydrogen with integrated carbon capture.
By building on proven practices from Western Canada and global carbon management experience, this pilot could become a cornerstone of Quebec’s emissions reduction strategy and lay the foundation for a circular economy, enabling low-emissions energy for existing and new industries. Success will position Quebec as a leader in carbon storage technology and sustainable resource development.
Support Requested
The project seeks funding to offset engineering, permitting, drilling, carbon injection, monitoring, and early pipeline development costs. Support will enable well construction, data acquisition, and regulatory compliance, validating carbon storage in Quebec and paving the way for future low-emission hubs and hydrogen facilities.
