Tailings Management Through Nano Technologies

Solution Developer

Carbonix Inc.

Project Description

Carbonix recognizes that the resource extraction and energy industries in Canada form the backbone of the economy. Collectively, the companies working in these industries are seeking methods to reduce their emissions and transition towards a lower-carbon economy. For Canada’s oil sands operators, this includes developing ESG-centric practices for activities such as the release of process waters back to the natural environment.
Carbonix has developed a patent-pending process to convert petroleum coke, a by-product generated by industry, into advanced nano products that enable operators to achieve their fluid tailings reclamation and GHG reduction targets. One group of products is designed and engineered to adsorb organics and metals. Others flocculate clays, which collapse colloids, releasing pore water for further treatment. The last group facilitates the reduction of salts through an ion exchange.
The processes and products developed by Carbonix are designed to enable a circular economy that converts low-value, sustainably available feedstocks into high-value-add solutions allowing oil sands operators to support their net-zero emission objectives while mitigating climate-related financial risk.
Since 2011, Carbonix has continuously executed research and development activities while refining our process and products to lower costs and raise efficacy. We have been steadily scaling our process from lab to bench, to mini-pilot plant and now to full pilot operations. CRIN funding will enable Carbonix to scale our efficacy testing in a manner that is both relevant and representative of the needs of the Canadian oil sands industry.
