Project Description

The project goal was to inform the regulatory process and result in commercial services for Beyond Visual Line of Sight ("BVLOS") and RPAS Traffic Management ("RTM'') services used to scale the integration of drones into the national airspace. The shared objective with regulators is to establish "Air Traffic Control for Drones", while enabling "BVLOS drones as a Capability" for the Energy sector.
As part of Canada national plans, the project funded activities for Phase 1 & Phase 2 RTM trials, conducted in partnership with Transport Canada and NAV CANADA. The project supported activities conducted under the Energy UTM Trails (EUT) and Alberta RTM Trials (iART) initiatives. The project deployed a network of airspace surveillance (cooperative & non-cooperative) across the province of Alberta, while establishing a hybrid communications network for drone Command & Control (C2). The infrastructure supported an
operational RTM system, used to conduct BVLOS flight operations, aligned with the future of integrated Canadian airspace.

The iART Alliance has grown to 40+ partnerships, which accelerated our ability to deploy the funding plans in a shorter period of time as documented in the iART Alliance Timeline. These initiatives are supported by the network of iART infrastructure that we have now established for the benefit of the BVLOS & RTM ecosystem.
Since the project started in 2022, 393 flights totaling more than 210 hrs and over 9650 kms of flight
operations have been conducted. The progress is documented in the Energy UTM Trials and iART Alliance playlists for review.
The project activities directly helped to inform the Canadian RTM Airspace Concept paper and RTM
Ecosystem: Concept of Operations through the collaboration with Transport Canada & NAV CANADA.

Support Requested

We enable the advancement of drone use cases to help businesses reduce costs and minimize their environmental footprint. Our technology and regulatory approvals benefit both companies looking to utilize drones and those manufacturing and selling them.
