Building Alberta’s Energy Innovation Ecosystem

During this COP29 event hosted by Tourmaline, Justin Riemer, CEO of Emissions Reduction Alberta, and Alberta’s Deputy Minister of Environment and Protected Areas, Sherri Wilson, emphasized the collaborative approach between government, industry, and researchers to advance emissions reduction technologies and Alberta’s pioneering policy framework. Yvan Champagne of Carbon AI and Scott Volk from Tourmaline showcased Alberta’s distinctive “get-it-done” mindset, driving advancements in carbon capture, methane reduction, and sustainable energy practices.

Panelists discussed Alberta’s targeted carbon pricing system, which incentivizes emission reductions and enables companies to leverage both funding and regulatory support to scale innovative projects. Alberta’s leadership in energy innovation, combined with its practical, solution-driven ethos, has fostered an ecosystem that is adaptable and globally influential, setting a high standard in emission reduction efforts. This session underscored Alberta’s commitment to balancing environmental progress with economic growth through continuous collaboration and innovation.
