We are seeking to fill the role of Director of Operations. You will be leading a team with national scope and regional, national and global impact, working in a highly collaborative environment.
Position Overview
The Director of Operations is a contracted senior leadership role based in Calgary. The Director of Operations is responsible for the effective day-to-day management, integration, and performance of CRIN’s operations. Reporting to the CRIN President (volunteer), the role ensures that CRIN’s strategy, governance, funding obligations, and operational systems are executed efficiently, transparently, and in compliance with applicable requirements.
This role acts as the operational backbone of the organization, enabling CRIN’s Board, committees, volunteers, and contracted resources to function cohesively and deliver impact across CRIN’s national innovation mandate to realize CRIN’s vision.
Reporting directly to the Director of Operations are the Manager of Administration & Events, Manager of Stakeholder Engagement & Communications, Manager of Finance & Contracts, Manager of Information Systems and Infrastructure and Manager of Technology Enablement.
Key Responsibilities
Organizational Leadership & Governance
- Support the CRIN Board, Executive Committee, and Steering Committee in fulfilling their governance and oversight responsibilities, be an ex-officio member of the board and chair of the Steering Committee
- Oversee the preparation of Board, Executive Committee and Steering Committee agenda and materials.
- Direct organizational operations to ensure CRIN’s strategic plan, annual priorities, and workplans are developed and implemented.
- Serve as a trusted operational advisor to the President, Executive Committee and Board Chair securing input and support from appropriate experts as required.
- Maintain CRIN’s articles of association, by-laws, corporate records, and statutory filings.
- Lead development of funding applications and participate in any related negotiations.
- Ensure CRIN has a viable Sustainability Plan.
Operations Management
- Act as the focal point for the internal management of CRIN
- Develop and execute execution and resourcing plans.
- Evaluate organizational effectiveness and recommend improvements.
- Serve as a resource to the committee chairs and supporting staff to ensure seamless execution of strategy and workplans.
- Provide oversight and integration across all CRIN operational functions and contractors in their support of the volunteer innovation network of networks
- Administer CRIN’s organizational policies and guidelines, including competition law compliance procedures, and lobby registries.
- Develop and improve organizational systems, processes, and performance metrics aligned with achieving CRIN’s vision.
- Maintain records of commitments, milestones, and achievements.
- Maintain contractor and operational records.
Financial Oversight & Funding Management
- Oversee annual budgeting, financial reporting, accounting, and cash management.
- Oversee government funding agreements, compliance, and reporting.
- Support annual financial audit and any special audits by funders
- Ensure adherence to eligible project selection and evaluation requirements.
Compliance, Risk & Policy Management
- Develop and monitor compliance with CRIN policies and procedures.
- Ensure alignment with federal and provincial regulatory requirements.
- Identify and mitigate operational risks.
Digital and Data Enablement
- Oversee IT systems and collaboration platforms.
- Support CRIN’s Data Strategy.
Technology Enablement Program, IP & Competition Enablement
- Support the Technology Enablement Committee Chair and Manager in the development, communication and execution of technology challenges and competitions.
- Ensure Eligible Project Selection Criteria Strategy is adhered to.
- Work with the Technology Enablement Committee on program delivery.
- Support CRIN’s Intellectual Property Strategy
Membership, Network & Stakeholder Enablement
- Working closely with the Chair and Manager of the Membership Engagement Outreach and Stakeholder Committee maintain and evolve CRIN’s Network of Networks Strategy.
- Support member engagement and retention initiatives.
And other operational responsibilities that may arise necessary for a world-class collaboration organization.
Qualifications & Experience
- Senior-level leadership experience in Canada’s oil and gas industry.
- Senior operations or leadership experience in not-for-profit, innovation, or funding environments.
- Experience working with Boards and volunteer governance.
- Knowledge of government funding programs and compliance.
- Financial oversight and policy development experience.
Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other meaningful information:
- You will be expected to contribute to agreed-upon working norms, including workdays and location, etc. The role will require a combination of remote work and work in an office environment located in downtown Calgary.
- There may also be some irregular hours throughout the week, including weekends (e.g., event-specific activities).
